Title Searches
Q. I would like to obtain property details regarding two properties from the registry office in Ottawa. Can you tell me where this office is or if there is a way to obtain this information via the Internet? (I would like) details such as registered owner, purchase price, survey details (size of the lot and how the house is situated on the lot), outstanding liens, etc.
A. To get this information, you can go to City Hall at 161 Elgin Street,
4th floor and do a title search. It costs $8 for the first page, $1 for each
additional page and they only accept cash or cheque (no Interac or credit
cards).
Your lawyer definitely would have access to this information on-line but
they will probably charge you $20 or more (depending on the extent of the
search). They usually hire outside companies to do manual title searches for
older properties that are not converted to the electronic system yet. You
can hire these companies yourself too - just look them up in the Yellow
Pages.
